A spa building that kept its corridors, its glasshouse and its well
Pendle Rise has 71 rooms behind a grey stone front on the edge of Harrogate. The sulphur well that first drew visitors here is still in the lobby, capped under glass, and on warm afternoons it still smells faintly of itself.
There are long corridors, a cast-iron glasshouse off the east wing and three-quarters of an acre of garden at the back. The hotel's own casino is inside the building too, one floor down from the lobby.
Stay
Seventy-one rooms, no two corridors the same length
The building wasn't designed as a hotel, so the rooms vary a good deal. Open one below to read more.
Pump Room Double
Twenty-eight of these sit along the first-floor corridor, with high sashes looking over the gravel turning circle and the chestnut at the gate.
Glasshouse Suite
Four rooms in the east wing open straight onto the cast-iron glasshouse, so morning coffee comes with ferns and condensation.
Stray View Single
A small top-floor room with a slice of the Stray visible past the rooftops, if you stand at the window and lean a little.
Eat & drink
Four rooms that feed people
-
Sulphur & Salt
The main dining room, under the original plaster ceiling. The menu runs to Yorkshire lamb and brown shrimp, and a cheese trolley turns up at the table whether you asked or not. Dinner is served from six.
-
The Long Corridor Bar
Thirty metres of panelling, with stools down one side. They pour gin from Masham and cask ale, and there's usually someone reading a paper at the far end.
-
The Cast Iron Room
Breakfast and afternoon tea are served in the glasshouse, with hot scones at three, though the heating struggles honourably in February.
-
Garden Steps
A hatch at the back door sells soup, sandwiches and tea in paper cups to anyone heading out to the lawn. It's open until four, weather permitting.
Garden floor
Pendle Rise Casino, the casino under the lobby
18+
The casino is one floor below the lobby, on the garden floor of Pendle Rise. Use the stairs beside the sulphur well or take the lift; either way you're at the door in well under a minute, and you don't go outside the building to reach it. It's a small room with a few tables and a bar, open in the evenings. The dress code asks for a collar and no sportswear or trainers.
You must be 18 or over to come in, and we check photo ID at the door on every visit, regulars included. Staff set limits on the floor and they differ from table to table, so ask before you sit down. Self-exclusion is arranged in person at reception during the day, with a member of management, and the casino has no online form for it.
This is a land-based casino inside Pendle Rise in Harrogate. The website offers no online casino games and takes no bets, deposits or payments, and the casino floor can't be booked through it. The house rules for the casino are printed and kept at reception beside the opening hours.
Getting around
Harrogate is small enough to walk
- Harrogate station is a nine-minute walk. Trains run to Leeds in about thirty-five minutes and to York in roughly forty.
- Leeds Bradford airport is a twenty-five minute drive south-west, or the 36 bus plus a short hop.
- The Stray starts two streets away: two hundred acres of grass with paths across it, good for an hour before breakfast.
- Parking is on the gravel at the front, with fourteen spaces on a first-come basis. The multi-storey on Jubilee Road takes the overflow.
